MGMA Stat - Physician compensation plans - Jun. 6, 2017

Medical Group Management Association’s MGMA Stat poll asked healthcare professionals if the physicians in their organization were satisfied with their compensation plan. Just under half of the respondents (48 percent) provided a positive response, while 32 percent indicated their physicians were not satisfied with the compensation plan and 20 percent were uncertain.

To focus on the organizations which reported their doctors were not satisfied with the compensation plan, the poll asked for these respondents to provide a narrative comment.  The most common observation described how operating costs were increasing faster than practice revenue which pressured doctors to work harder or accept lower compensation. Some of the respondents described how they were revising their compensation methodology to reduce the emphasis on productivity in order to place a portion of compensation at risk for quality metrics and other patient care measures.  In general, respondents commented that there is no single methodology that would fit all practice situations.

The poll was conducted on June 6, 2017 with 1128 total responses. Of this total, 57 indicated the question was not applicable to their situation with a net of 1071 applicable responses.
